This is the Most Underrated Fashion Girl of All Time
Not only is this my all time favorite movie (ahead.of.its.time and I can quote every word start to finish) the costumes were a complete prediction of what was to come in modern fashion
Josie and the Pussycats has my favorite costumes in film history. I know there are movie epics with incredible period costuming but I personally am not a huge period piece fan (I’m sorry I know) while structurally the clothes are beautiful, I get bored. I can’t help but recognize the unbelievable predictions this film made in terms of modern marketing/the modern “influencer” and the intense desire for “out-there” personal style in a world of constant trends and commercialism. This movie isn’t just great clothes, it was a warning of what was to come.
This brings me to Fiona… the most fashionable and iconic fixture of this film. I hope to one day write some kind of dissertation on the cultural impact and uncanny predictions of a film - made in 2001 - basically seeing 20 years into the future in terms of and collective behavior. We are told what to think is cool, what we NEED immediately from influencers and our cell phones all things blatantly outlined in this movie… but this article is simply dedicated to the immaculate style of *Fiona*
We are introduced to Fiona in this leather arm banded, plastic(?) dress with matching blue knee high socks paired with black lace up heels. Need I say more?? The mixing of texture, the mixing of prints - the matching eyeshadow and face gems - ugh it is just so good. This kind of boldness has missing in fashion for years, everything is either plain quiet luxury or a mess for the sake of being a mess. There is intention here behind each element of her outfit, this is a fashion girl through and through.
This look is sadly only seen briefly in the film but again, look at the texture here. The shapes, sleek necklace, oversized hoop. Feathered top, beaded necklace. There is so much juxtaposition yet the look makes sense. The colors flow, the shapes flow, I don’t exactly know how she has this much time to find one of a kind accessories while also brainwashing America’s youth… but obsessed none the less.
The details in this film from necklaces, to body stickers, to feathered chest pieces, to leather circles stuck to her collar bone - the accessory choices are phenomenal. A film like Devil Wear’s Prada would have benefited in my opinion from some out there choices like this, I know most of the women are 90’s early 2000’s chic in that film but to show true fashion I really feel you need drama. This film adds drama, it isn’t just a gown, it is a gown paired with human art, she is literally becoming the look.
This specific feather necklace has remained in my brain since my first (of 1,005,595,585,594 times) watching the film. In 30 years I have never encountered another necklace like this on screen or in life, I would LOVE to see a fashion week moment like this.
Her home very clearly matching that of DVF with photos of herself everywhere is just everything to me. Who else is a true fashion
Two absolute icons.
The final Fiona look of the film is 500 times better than most of the outfits at the Camp themed Met Gala. THIS is camp. She is wearing a walking advertisement for her brainwashing record label.. she is literally brainwashing people with the outfit by marketing to them and essentially nodding to the fact she is manipulating them. That fashion itself is just one giant advertisement. THIS IS CAMP PEOPLE. Karlie Kloss I am looking at you, girl.
Like this is GENIUS. Layers…levels…ugh insane. I am simply dying to see another movie with this level of pure fashion and parody. Rarely do fashion films have this much layered beneath, the film is a critique of the system as a whole but still serves at every turn. I love it and I love Fiona.
XO,
